2008 was a great year for video games. We drove across Liberty City eliminating gangsters while listening to cool radio, raided a cold land to face off against a Dark Lord, chased a villain across the galaxy, fought through endless corridors gunning down intelligent zombies, and uncovered the mysteries of a post-apocalyptic Washington DC. But a gamer couldn't help asking for more, and so the year 2009 promises a plethora of video games that will rock the very foundations of the world. Here are only a few of the most anticipated games of 2009.
The Sims 3
The Sims is one of the best simulation games of all time. In this game you get to control several families each living in their own dream house. You choose their career, hobbies, outfit, relationship, and so on. You could go to a vacation, visit downtown for a date, become a superstar, and even make magic.
The Sims 2 improved on the original and gave you a totally 360 degree camera. The game mechanics were improved and things became simpler and more realistic. With each expansion pack, you could do more things that would make your Sims larger than life.
Scheduled to be released in late February 2009, The Sims 3 should be a blast. The game now takes place in one smooth flowing neighborhood where your actions determine what happens elsewhere. There are no more loading times! You can move from one lot to the other just like that. The graphics have been improved from the last game while maintaining the traditional Sims visuals. You can now customize your characters to a whole new level. And the developers have said that they have heard the voices of the fans and have included many things we want to see in a Sims game. Let's wait and see if The Sims 3 will be able to fulfill our expectations.
BioShock 2: Sea of Dreams
BioShock delivered a unique story and setting which won the heart of many gamers worldwide. Everyone loved it. It was one of the best games of 2008, but before we can get over the delight of having played the first game, we are teased with the trailer of the second installment, Bioshock 2: Sea of Dreams.
Till now we don't have any idea about the story, but we do see an older Little Sister holding a doll that resembles Big Daddy in the trailer. That's the only hint of characters we have so far. Let's see if the second part can live up to the greatness the first game has established.
2K Games has released the news that Bioshock 2 will hit the PC, PS2 and Xbox 360 in the third quarter of 2009.
Starcraft II
The first game, Starcraft, had been released ten years ago, but its popularity hasn't waned a bit. People everywhere still play and love this real time strategy game. It's so popular that international gaming competitions like WCG host Starcraft every year. In Korea, professional Starcraft players are celebrities and their matches are broadcast live!
And now it's time to brace for the second coming. Blizzard couldn't have chosen a better time to release Starcraft II; on the tenth anniversary of the first game. On top of that, Blizzard has done the millions of fans a favor by retaining most part of the original in the new game. Those who have played the demo of Starcraft II have reported that it still feels like the old game along with many same features like nostalgic audio clips. The graphics of the new game are simply gorgeous and accentuates the setting very nicely.
Starcraft is one of the most balanced and exciting games ever, and that's why many fans wonder if the second game can be that good. Release date is still to be announced, however, we do know that there will be three separate games, each focusing on one race: Wings of Liberty is the first game (Terrans), Heart of the Swarm is the second game (Zerg), and Legacy of the Void is the last one (Protoss).
Resident Evil 5
Resident Evil will return to terrify the next generation consoles this March. Much video footage has been revealed and we know that this game is fantastic graphics wise. One of the characters is the familiar Chris Redfield and the other one is Sheva, a very handy woman to tag along with.
The gameplay is very similar to Resident Evil 4, but you couldn't blame it on the developers. RE4 was such a great experience! RE5 should offer the same as we head towards an African setting this time. We are promised that in this game no place is safe, which should intensify the survival horror aspect.
To make things even better, this time you can play online with another friend and take on the zombie horde as team. So we have to wait until March 13, 2009 for this long awaited game to hit the shelves and plunge us into a "horror" world.
Diablo III
The last game in our list is yet another sequel! Game developers love feeding off the adoration of the fans by delivering us sequels perfected for an intense experience. Diablo III looks like it will fulfill the fans' expectation.

From the video footages revealed, we know that we have the similar action type gameplay of the previous Diablo's, but the animations and effects look so much sweeter. Your weapons and armor will be much more detailed, for instance a weapon with lightning damage capabilities will crackle with electricity beautifully. The enemies are of various sizes now, and the dungeons look very slick.
Much of the previous skills and items have been retained and blended with a host of new ones. A new class, the Witchdoctor has also been introduced, which plays similar to the Necromancer but is unique in its own right. Even though you won't get to customize your character, you will be able to choose your gender this time around. But who cares about that, right? Diablo is all about the items that make you godly which sets it apart from any other games. Let's hope it is released soon.
