The multitudes of Unreal Tournament 3 fans were disappointed when UT3 hit the stores. The game was labeled an "Epic Fail". Hardcore gamers despaired because this new installment was reeking with bugs and lacking sufficient adjustable settings. No serious competitions considered UT3 as one of the tournament games. Epic tried to fix this by introducing several patches, but it didn't do much to retain the interests of casual gamers. Only true fans stuck to the game for the sheer love of the intense action. However, Epic finally revealed their plan to radically reinvigorate UT3 that promises to bring back old fans and attract a new crowd. Yes, Unreal Tournament 3 Titan Pack had been revealed last week, and on March 5th Titans will walk the Unreal world.
The new expansion pack is true to its name, because it will deliver a plethora of new content. There will be 2 new characters, 16 new maps and 2 new game modes (Greed and Betrayal). New weapons and deployables will be strewn about the arena and we will get the chance to ride the Stealthbender. Now players will be able to track their performance through the Steam Achievements system which will consist of 57 distinct awards. PS3 gamers will now be able to duel head to head in a split screen mode that was so eagerly desired. Finally, the Titan mutator will allow players to become a 15 foot long Titan armed with a super-powered rocket launcher. Sounds interesting? These are only the sugar coatings. Included in this new expansion pack (aka Patch 2.0) will be hundreds of improvements and tweaking that will make the game an overall better experience.
I won't go into detail about all new content, as they've been covered in the beyondunreal forums. What interest me most are the new game types. First, the Titan mutator. The multiple kills and the spree awards will now come into a more technical use other than just providing gory satisfaction. The more kills you make, the faster your Titan meter will develop. When it is filled, you can unleash your wrath as a fifteen foot long Titan. But it doesn't stop there! You can fill your meter again to become a nearly thirty feet tall Behemoth! As a Titan or Behemoth, you can pound on your opponents and squash them like a bug, literally. This should be a fresh new mode for Unreal fans everywhere.
The Titan Pack also promises a strategic and fun filled game mode through Betrayal. The name says it all. In this special instagib mode, players will be able to betray their team mates and steal points. Ultimately there will be only one winner. But assassinating pals have their downsides as well: for 30 seconds your former team mates will be able to slay you like the dog that you are for betraying them and earn bonus points. And if you think you can get away with it each and every time, be careful, because a number on top of your head will display how many times you've backstabbed your partners before. So this should be a very tactical and intense game mode where every friend is also an enemy.
The other new game type is Greed. This game mode is similar to CTF and VCTF. It reminds me of an old mode from Quake 3 Team Arena where you had to collect skulls from fallen enemies. You have to reach your opponent's base and touch their flag with all those skulls to earn points. However, if you die, any finder can keep the skulls you drop. So once again, this mode promises a lot of new tactics to be employed.
If you are a fan of the Unreal series, then this expansion pack is a gift from the Gods (or perhaps the Titans). We only have two more weeks to wait for this gargantuan patch. And the best part is, it's free! Yes, you read it right. All this extravaganza at no cost. Unreal Tournament 3 will probably receive the recognition it truly deserves at last. Just two more weeks, and the clash of the titans will begin.
