Just a week ago, Epic released the 2.0 patch for Unreal Tournament 3 along with the free expansion Titan Pack. For those of you who haven't downloaded it yet, here are the links. You will first need to install the 2.0 patch and then the Titan Pack. Of course, if you have your UT3 hooked up to Steam, then the update will be downloaded automatically for you.
Here's a list of what's in the Titan Pack according to Beyond Unreal:
- 16 new maps + 3 bonus pack 1 maps
- Titan mutator
- Greed and Betrayal gametypes
- Stinger Turret, Eradicator Cannon Artillery and the Stealthbender vehicle
- X-Ray Field and Link Station Deployables
- Slow-Field power-up (pickup version of the deployable of the same name)
- Two new characters: Nova (Liandri) and Kana (Ronin)
- 57 Steam Achievements
- Major enhancements, incuding AI, network performance, menu and UI, better mod support
- Client-side demo recording, updated server browser, new maplist system, mid-game mutator and gametype voting functionality
The first thing you'll notice as you open Unreal Tournament 3 is that the theme has changed. The main menu and the other menus are now painted with a dark grayish theme that appropriately represents the nature of the game; this is not a game for the weak hearted. The server browser has features that make life a lot easier and in the options setting you can now change advanced graphics options. Leaving all those behind, what really makes this game enjoyable is the Titan mutator.
If the Titan mutator is enabled, then you will have a meter on the lower right corner of the screen which you have to fill to transform into a 15 feet long monster (with 400 health and 400 armor). After transforming, you will be armed with a super-powered Rocket Launcher that shoots homing rockets, and a Shock Rifle with an insane rate of fire. You will also be able to perform a ground pound attack by pressing the "Use" key (which is E by default).
As if that isn't enough, you will be able to fill your meter again. When the meter gets full while you are a Titan, you will be able to transform into a 30 feet Behemoth! You will now have double the health and double the armor and your ground pound attack will have a greater radius, but this transformation only lasts for 30 seconds unlike the previous transformation which lasts as long as you have health.
When either the Titan or the Behemoth dies, you will die with a blast, literally! So if you do manage to kill one (and get the Assassin reward), be sure to take cover, because the carcass of the Titan explodes with a Redeemer like explosion.
So how does the Titan meter exactly work? The titan meter has a max of 20 points. Each kill will get you one point and according to Bersu of VoxHouse Studio, you get points for the following:
+6 for Titan Kills, CTF Flag Capture.
+5 for a Leviathan Kill.
+2 for Darkwalker Kill, Goliath Kill, Enemy Flag Carrier Kill (Last Second Save), Returning Enemy Orb (Deciding to be a Hero), Capturing a Node with your Orb, Destroying a Node, Constructing a Node.
+1 for First Blood, Kill that marks Killing Sprees, Kill that marks Multi-Kills, Enemy Flag Carrier Kill, Each Skull scored in Greed.
You also get free points every time someone turns into a Titan, but that can be a slower process. So concentrate on completing the above objectives and you should be well on your way into turning into a giant.
Titans radically change how the game is played. But they cannot achieve major game objectives like ride vehicles or the hover board, construct a node, and carry orbs or flags. Titans are slow and cannot dodge or pick up items, and their ammo can run out easily if they spam. So Titans are very balanced mode in terms of gameplay and are best used for defense or support.
While turning into a Titan and wreaking havoc in the enemy base can be very fun, skilled players can take down a Titan. So make sure you become a Titan only when you need to. They are especially useful against vehicles or supporting your players as they make an assault towards the enemy conduit in Greed; just imagine two Titans supporting a flag carrier to their base and it's basically "gg" after that. They are also really useful in guarding nodes or supporting players who are constructing nodes. Finally, unless your health runs really low, there's really no need to transform into a Behemoth.
The Titan mutator is a great new addition to the Unreal Tournament 3 scene and it will probably revive this seemingly dead game. Indeed, the servers these days are almost always full and you frequently see clashes of the Titans. So go ahead and have fun.
