The teacher's a dumbass for pulling the N word out. He does have a point on a slight Technicality though; Intent's a big chunk of guilt.
That kid might have been fully offended by that (and validly so), but you're making yourself a victim by assuming someone means it in that way. That's not to say I don't think we should hold teachers and authority figures to higher standards of behaviour, and Oh, i don't know...Language? For instance the language they Teach?
I mean... I'm not italian, but the couple italian immigrants I know refer to themselves as WOPs sometimes and I certainly don't catch any shit for it when I bring it up. I mean... Nigga/er is the most commonly heard racially offensive term, and it's adopted into the friggin vernacular; An african american says it, and it's Street Talk, it's Gangsta, it's P-Diddylicious; It's a statement of defiance from the time of slavery, an adopted and reformed word for their own purposes... To refer to a friend or an enemy with One all-purpose word. But wait... If someone outside their race says it, with the same intent (As an affectionate or alternatively as a generalized insult), they're automatically racists?
Bah, the same kind of odd double-standards that'll never go away. Jackass Teacher should know better. Beat your kids, and teach them to respect other people, and we'll have a brighter future.
Maybe I ought to convert a word for my particular nationality. No one who is not of my nationality may call me that word; If they do, they're bigotted and Barbara Walters will take a crap on their lawn. Crud, i can't do that... Nobody hates us Canucks; We're America's Toque.

you americans are way too touchy, in israel we have such an enormus problem with "races" we have the arabs the israeli arabs the palestinians, the ashkenzim the sphradim, krataim, dosim, shomronim, mitnachalim druzim. and between each and every one of these there are tensions, but nobody even looks amazed when someone sais stincking arab. or shaid (terorist) or anything. i once told my teacher that i think he's a nazi (probably the biggest insult possible in israel) 5 mins later we were discussing the eastern front.
yyyish so he said nigga

i don't understand what the big fuss is about all this. Today i was called cracker by a group of black people and a teacher.... And it is kinda a daily thing. somethign along the lines of 'shut up honkey' or 'yo white boy why u listen to rap?' always someone hatin. It just pisses me off that they can call me whitey, white boy, cracker, honkey or any other white racist thing they can think of but if i say black i get jumped.

Ahh, yes, the Double standard. I spoke about it earlier, and it is widely recognized. As youngins, regardless of race there's widely applicable social diagnoses for that kind of behaviour; To name one, the formation of social groups and the forced exclusion/separation by criticism to place one group Above another, at least in said group's view.
That's not to say it doesn't happen with "adults," but I'd say that with the responsibilities associated with Adulthood, you have less time and energy to concentrate on being a jackass to people not in your gang or social group; You have to work, pay bills, and find someone to procreate with.
As far as not understanding the Fuss, I'd say it's a little naive of you to think that just because you don't get offended by it, no-one else will be. As has been said before, sometimes you can make yourself a victim, but it doesn't make You the one in the wrong. I think it's a bit silly to allow yourself to be so sensitive that the mere mention of a word would disturb you in the way that it would a normal person, having it directed AT them. To clarify, Sometimes the word **** will offend people no matter if you direct it at them: "**** You" or if you use it in an exclamatory sense: "****!"
I believe it's selfish to expect people to not use a word that offends you, when they use it in a way that is not directed at you. In refinement of that, people Should use common sense in governing when they use certain language.
I grew up with "There are three words for everything; The word you'd use with your friends, the word you'd use with your mother or grandmother, and the word you'd use with the Queen." You make a slip and offend someone with your language, maybe apologize, and reasonably be more attentive to your language. There's no reason to be antagonistic and, for instance, pull out Freedom of Speech; That just escalates what should be a minor event. Bottom line, be reasonable and empathetic to other people, and you will avoid a whole whack of unnecessary conflicts.
