I need a new gaming pig rig. Unlike Pig who has an alienware, I still run on a dell8200. In order to bring my game up to the next level I think I need a real comp. So, does anyone know what will get me 200 constant FPS in CS:source?

Oohh... Dude I'm a nerd. I suggest the following,

An AMD cpu, Preferably a 3700+ SAN DIEGO or greater, anything lower doesn't offer the cache size.

For a Motherboard, Asus A8N-SLI PREMIUM or the ASUS A8N32-SLI are both stellar motherboards, but the latter is better. People say get a DFI motherboard, but those are for pro overclockers.

For ram I suggest some OCZ EL, It has crazy tight timings and can overclock very well.

CPU Cooler that I reccomend is the ThermalTake Big Typoon, Dead silent and gives nearly ambient temps.

Harddrives will only affect your load time, So a Good SATA ( Seagate Barracuda or a nice Western digital, all others are POS )

For very Fast Load times I reccomend the Raptor series for your OS and a secondary for your files.

Power Supply Unit = Sunbeam Nuuo SLI ..Very good, Solid rails, The only thing better is the OCZ powerstream or whatever they're called.

Finally, The Video card to help you achieve all this is the 1900XTX or the 1900XT OC. Both these cards will work best with Steam/HL2 because We all know ATI dominates the Source games.

NOTE: However If you get this setup Above, You will not be able to run two graphics cards because of the fact that the motherboard is SLI and not Crossfire.

If you need links or any other things sorted out, Or if you need to know if something's compatible or not just ask me. Also, If you have a specific budget tell me, And I will make something to match it.

And as to the post above, The FX are just bleh, A nice Sandiego will be able to reach the speed of a FX57 and perform on the same level as it does, for a quarter of the price. If you want to match the FX60's performance, Try an Opteron dual core.

You can hit about 120-160 on a single video card, 200+ is SLI/Crossfire territory, are those 40 FPS really worth it?

Yea, as long as you have PCI-E with anything higher than an x800, youll get more than 100fps, and get 2gb RAM.
I wouldnt really hop onto the AMD wagon, my friend has one and his computer randomly freezes and goes to desktop or just crashes when he plays CSS, I would stick with Intel, anything over 3.2ghz will be fine.

2 gb of ram does shit unless you're into video editing and graphic design. A gig is fine.

I can help you out with that stuff like if youve seen my rig that I posted in here me and my frined built it in like 3 hours and had it completly running and I only payed $1500 for mine and I on average get about 200 to 250fps unlike insanity's beat computer where he payed like $3500 for his and my computer scores higher on 3Dmark stress tests. So if you have any questions feel free to hit me up.

Haha, I don't think you've seen many comparisons, the AMD cpu running 1 ghz slower with less cache and less voltage beats a heavily overclocked P4. The P4 is a dead end cpu, a low end 3000+ overclocked will pwn anything intel, stock or overclocked.

General rule of thumb is, if your multitasking go for an intel, if your gaming go for an amd. Any AMD processer will be able to give you upwards of 150 FPS+ , ranging from 170 US to about 1200 US. The difference isn't alot.

2 Gigs is absolutely necessary if you plan on gaming with the new windows ( VISTA ) because Vista uses 800 megs of ram at idle. Also, At higher resolution is when that ram actually comes in handy, and comparitively speaking, it's cheaper to get a 2 gb kit at once, compared to buying two, 1 gb kits. Also with a 2 GB kit it comes with two modules so you can run them in dual channel to, in theory, double the speed.

can he run on train and inferno perfect? and on what settings? If you just want a cheap card to run CS, I suggest a 9800 PRO. They can run the game all maxed without HDR, Back when the 9800PRO was the best and the greatest, they actually sold them all with a copy of HalfLife2 just to showcase the Card's actual potential and power.

lol, insanity what are your current AM3 scores and 3dmark 05 scores? I probably beat them with my 6800GS * special edition mind you, 500 core/ 1.5 ghz memory * and my athlon 3000+ that runs 2.7 on 1.5 V

03-28-2006, 10:57 AM
hehe...I get like 6.5 K with those speeds, I could score a 13K in 3dmark 05 but it's hard finding a GS that can run as high as mine can without volt mods :(

Anyways...What are you planning on getting payne?

Errr...what's your budget and I'll help find the parts for your rig. also, do you prefer to build your own or buy pre-built? (I'm too lazy to look back into this thread so please tell me if I have overlooked the info I'm looking for.)

I suggest case: Antec 900 - $140
mobo: EVGA NF59 - $150
GPU: EVGA 8800GTS 320MB (No need for 640MB unless you're using a 30inch lcd monitor.)- $280
Hard Drive: Samsung Spinpoint 500Gb 7200 rpm(no need for a 150gb raptor because you wont notic ethe 1 second difference in load time + do want to spend 200 bucks for 150GB when you can spend 120 on 500? :P) -$120
Optical drive: Lite-on 20X w/ lightscribe - $32
Monitor: keep your CRT :D
OS: Stick with Windows XP
RAM: GEIL(My suggestion) OCZ or Corsair 2GB - $100
CPU: AMD 5600+ 2.8GB - $150
Mouse: Razer copperhead or Logitech g5 orrrr MX518(What i have) - $60
total: $1032 :D

Personally, I see it this way.

Get a Quad Core CPU (such as the Core 2 Duo Q6600, which is 280 dollars; pretty good for a quad core)
Get about 2-3 gigs of RAM if you're sticking to 32-bit (which most of the time you should) (OCZ, Corsair, Mushkin or Gskill suggested) Ensure the timings are low enough (like 4-4-4-15 or something similar, some even give 4-3-4-11).
Like the previous poster, stick with the 8800 GTS 320 mb. With my setup I get 250 FPS at least on d2. But if you wanna go crazy: get the 8800 Ultra or GTX.
AS for the mobo, either get eVGA or ASus. I personally like the eVGA 680i Premium. I hear it's buggy but I haven't encountered any of the bugs. So that's up to you.
Finally, get Windows XP with a good sound card (like the X FI Fatal1ty FPS).
The case and PSU is up to you but generally stick with Antec and Thermaltake for cases and SilverStone for PSUs.
For cooling, I think the THermaltake Big Typhoon is great for air based cooling. Otherwise, goto liquid cooling if you plan on overclocking which definitely increases your frame rate in game,
It's about 1500 for getting all this but it really depends on your needs. I have this setup (extremely similar not exactly though)

Hope that helps.

If I was buying today it'd be:

Q6600 quad core
Abit I35 Pro
2 GB G.Skill pc2-6400
Zalman 9700 cooler
8800 GTS 320 (I play at 1280 X 1024, get a 640mb version for anything above that)

Just ripe for overclocking; that cooler with some arctic silver applied properly should be stable with a core speed of 3.2 GHz or thereabouts at a reasonable heat with the right case cooling.
