Life is never a waste as long as you enjoy and are content with what you are doing.
Who cares about being a "productive" member of society. Find out what you like to do and do it.
Im a caddy during the summer at a country club and I dont do anything through the winter.

I did 2 years of an Electrical Engineering degree, and I've withdrawn from the program because, while i'm capable of it, it's not what I want to do. I empathize with you, Paradox, since I had similar troubles with the 2nd year of the program. I went through aptitude testing, Interest testing; the whole nine yards. Everything said I could do Electrical Engineering, but I just couldn't get myself to learn it. I thought the same kinds of things you expressed, that my life would be a waste, But it won't be; I'm not going to let it.
I'm working at a tech-support call centre nowadays; I talk to nice people and irate people all day for 5 days of the week. Is this where I want to be for the rest of my life? Probably not even if I were to climb to management and get a salaried position, but it serves my needs for (at least) financial aquisition and socialization/networking; I even get satisfaction out of solving people's problems, however small they might be.
I've worked in Construction, Rennovation, Landscaping, Garbage Collection, Administrative Assistance, Film/Television Production, Ice maintenance, and now it's Customer Support. Maybe in the future i'll go back to school for Film/TV production because I did enjoy that a great deal, but for now, I'll take what I need out of the job i've got, Make it a career until I want to change.

Me and Pig are electrical engineers. It wasn't easy at all to become an engineer. We have ms degrees also, so we are already specialized in a subject within engineering. But we are finding out now that they want us to specialize in a career/field path within electrical engineering. I can tell you engineering is not that bad. But I feel more accomplishment working on this hobby: making the videos, making web sites, pwning noobs, etc. even though we make close to nothing after long hours compared to the pay for doing what I consider very easy electrical engineering work at my company.

I also cut grass in the summer (no, im not mexican) and work at my friends restraunt, A Peice of Ireland, bussing tables and serving food. Its alot but it is fun and i make some good money off of it all.

Do you write for a company or freelance? Work on writing sitcom scripts like seinfeld.
Sinfeld could possibly be the best show ever. I watch it every night at 7oclock on FOX.

sin don't join the marines, there are way more exciting career fields that are more action packed but actually require you to be smart in other branches. don't just think you have to be infantry to kill lots of people and be a super badass. plz explore your options <3
