Post everything here that has to do with Overclocking Video cards, CPU's, and RAM.

I for one would like to know how, because the only thing I know how to do is barely overclock a video card, I would also like to know how to overclock my CPU which is a 3300+ and maybe my 1024mb's of ram. As far as I know my 6200 is an un-overclockable card, something to do with no hidden pipelines or something.

Just upgrade to an ATI X850 or a 7800...those are equivilants...right?

If you dont know what you are doing then i suggest not messing with it. Not to sound smart but to save you a cpu. Overclocking is dangerous and you can add too much voltage to you're cpu and "blow it up" Normally overclocking is a matter of unlocking the cpu and then changing the multiplier. I have a utility for overclocking though so its super easy. I just take it up as high as i feel comfortable and leave it. 3.0ghz Intel CPU @ 3.2GHz Highest i've had it was 3.42ghz but it wasn't very stable. 3.2ghz is stable and runs night and day without any overheating issues.

would you mind posting a link to that OC utility? :)

It's not a link its a utility that is built into my motherboard. You have to have the Motherboard i have and the CD that goes with it otherwise i would gladly share with you guys. My motehrboard is an MSI so if you want to look around for MSI Overclocking Utility then have at it.

Guru3d.com has alot of things on overclocking, even a bunch of OC programs, the one I use is the "Riva Tuner", the community is good, they can help you out teach out to easily unlock pipelines and overclock your video card CPu and Ram. With that program, I couldn't unlock my pipes because my card only came with 4 and none to unluck. But I did overclock it pretty good.

Here's my vid card here http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16814133151
I over clocked the core to 461
And the Ram to 505
Maybe I do more later but, u get the idea.

In Source, overclocking the gfx card won't do much: it's pretty CPU-intensive.

I got better performance from cranking my 2.0 GHz 3200+ to 2.45GHz with no stability issues, than upgrading from a Radeon 9700 pro to an X850 XTPE...

yea, my Asus allows me to overclock my dual core 3.2 ghz baby, but I really see no reason to go past 6.4 ghz...

i agree...

i dedicated an extra 128ram to my video memory and saw absolutely no increase in performance or fps or anything....

i need to OC my cpu :)

Hey guys,

Sorry to be such a noob, but what exactly is overclocking? From what I have gathered it's basically improving/unlocking the potential of your current harware?

I wanna try and overclock my shitty processsor (1.8GHz AMD) but firstly I havent got a clue what to do, and secondly I heard that I could be in risk of completly ****ing my pc, if I do it incorrectly...

What does it involve, is done through software or manually by hand through hardware?

Cheers

your definition of overclocking is pretty much correct....
yes it can **** up your computer
it's done by software, not by physically altering your hardware (that would be upgrading =D)

Thanks :D

I wasnt sure if I had to break out a screwdriver and go all crazy with the insides of my pc :S

Well actually with some setups you do have to go into your system and move a few jumpers on the motherboard. They are used for the fsb of your cpu and sometimes you can change the multiplier from the motherboard. Otherwise alot of overclocking is in the BIOS. Thats accessed by pressing the button your system has chosen at startup. Right as the black screen is switching to the windows XP screen i press the delete key a few times and the bios pops up. From there you can change certain settings to unlock and overclock the cpu. Of course, why do all that if you can find a program to do it with? :)

After having a look around at some 'OCin websites and understanding jackshit about what they said I've decided to just upgrade :D

Well, at least overclocking my div card helps out other games of mine, like Far Cry

read this:

http://www.tomshardware.com/2006/05/10/dual_41_ghz_cores/

it does a pretty good job of explaining what they do to overclock (from there you can do your own..... AT YOUR OWN RISK)

also, it shows what kind of thing you can get going for a small price, except for power consumption

Yeah, but power supplies are so cheap it doesn't even matter.

I meant the electricity bill..... with that kind of power consumption ( if you leave your comp. on all the time like i do), it will be throught the roof.

We leave our pc's and light on and the bill isn't that high. It depends on where you live too.

Man in Boston, everything is like the most expensive in the US, I mean this is the most expensive city in the US to live aside from New York and a few other places.

But if you leave your computer on standby that it is practically off and only uses maybe the amount of power your alarm clock does when it's on.

Tell me about it. I was even thinking seriously of relocating to Dallas with my job just to pay less rent / bills :)
