i have a 256mb graphic card on a 1 gig ram...i read that for the graphic card to work at its best u should have a graphic card thats the same size as the ram!!is this true??because im in the market for a new 1!!what would be the best for a 1 gig ram???
no thats not true at all.
This sounds like it stems from the old performace saying that for optimal performance u set the graphics aperature on ur BIOS to be the size of your grpahics card but that was from a long time ago, the era of 32MB, 64MB, and OMG!!!! 128MB video cards. Aperature nowadays is pretty irrelevant and for the most part taken care of by the OS.
a 256 MB card sounds reasonable - although the memory of the card says nothing of its performance. It is the chip doing the processing that counts. As an example I have a 6600GT with 256 MB ram - which runs very differently from a 7900GT with 256 MB. What is the actual model of your graphics card?
and if your in the market for a new graphics card, just be aware that direct X 10 launches with windows VISTA this fall (we are on direct X 9c) and that means ATI and nVidia will release new cards and bring current cards down in price. Having said that I like either the nvidia 7900GT or the ati x1800XT - both are very fast cards and come with either 256 or 512 MB. But in games like source the CPU is often the limiting factor of the fps...to get the best CPU the intel core 2 duo is coming out July 23rd and the $300 version core 2 duo edges out the AMD fx-62 ($1250), the best processor currently on the market.
Often times a config or cfg can fix fps as much as a new graphics card. Casey's config is the most well regard one for older hardware. Payne's config is good for older hardware too.
hope that helped

its a ATI Radeon Xpress 200..
is this a good graphic card???
ATI radeon xpress 200 is what is known as integrated graphics, this just means it is built into the motherboard instead of being an add on slot. These are generally considered subpar to dedicated video cards. In your case, the Xpress 200 has 16 MB dedicated on chip memory. And uses 256 MB of system memory for itself. In your case the graphics chip is actually suing memory out fo ur 1 gig of main memory (my card has 256MB on the add on card).
The Xpress 200 is on par with a radeon 9500/9600 - they are cards that run much faster (and you have a PCI-E slot so you can jsut drop one in), but if your happy with your fps then there is no reason to upgrade, and like I said your fps depends heavily on your CPU. enable netgraph 3 and you'll be able to see your fps. Its the fps in heated battle that rly counts, it drops significantly as it does work.
Is a xpress 200 good? no. In the interent world of e-penis if you dont have the best your never good enough. Is it playable? yes, very.

Yeah i've got the NVIDIA GT6600, but I didn't have enough to upgrade my motherboard to the dual SLI and a new CPU, so I'm still pulling only 30-80 fps on good days.
