Just Got Source

I just got source today and I'm having some issues.

I got the game installed and I got in. I initially created a server to mess with it and I found myself lagging from the get go.

A friend of mine told me to turn down all the video settings in "advanced", which I did, to no success. Does anyone have any suggestions to help me stop lagging? Please and thank you!

try changing your dexlevel to 8.1 by adding the command
-dxlevel 81 in your cs:s launch setting

EDIT: I fixed the problem with the Cannot Display... Now I just need to work on the lag. Any ideas?

If you're using a blue tooth wireless set up, believe it or not it will mess with your FPS. Bro had that problem.

Well I'm almost certain I have nothing Blue Tooth related so I don't think that's the issue.

As for what Solid said,

I put those 3 things in console and created a server and I still have no success. I'm running about 20 FPS once I start the server then it gets lower and lower and stops at 10. It never changes from 10. I have around 16 choke when I start and that also decreases to 0 after I start playing.

I don't know if this is important but when I first enter the server it says in console

"Heap: 256.00 Mb
Parsed 359 text messages
execing config.cfg
2 CPUs (1 physical), Frequency: 2.8 Ghz, Features: GenuineIntel SSE SSE2 MMX RDTSC CMOV FCMOV"

If you have any more suggestions I'd greatly appreciate it.

I'll try it and see if I get any results. The starting FPS seems to be raising but always still lowers to 10 and remains that no matter what.

Well I seem to have kind of fixed the problem. I can play on small maps I think things like texture maps or something but I lag terribly in Office and D2.

I have tried lowering my settings and not succeeded, I don't know what HDR is, it's not a new comp, and I don't have any porn on the PC.

P.S. Your max_fps 300 might have been one of the things that helped.

well you and me are somewhat the same.. i get low fps on office, inferno, prodigy, d2, assault, and india. Well my computer is ****ed and i dont have css on this laptop so maybe someone here can teach him how to turn HDR off?

What do you think would be the best upgrade choice if I decide on one? RAM or a Memory Card or both?

My memory card -
Intel(R) 82915G/GV/910GL Express Chipset Family

Then I think this is my RAM -
Memory: 502MB RAM

I'm not sure if that's my RAM being used as opposed to my 512 total RAM or not. When I do a dxdiag run that's all I get.

EDIT: I get this about RAM when I do another Hardware Check

Ram imo - but the video card is what really determines your fps. But for high stress gaming, 1gb is usually optimal.

Alright so would I be looking to buy 512MB RAM or would I be buying 1 gig of RAM to replace my 512? Basically am I adding to or replacing when buying RAM?

buy a 512 & just add it on to the old 512 & now you have 1g

My uncle has explained how all the RAM and Graphics cards work. It sounds like I just need to upgrade a bit and I'll be set. I hope I have a 4 Slot RAM thing and not a filled 2 Slot =/ I need to find the manual lol.

I have tons of porn on my comp and it works juuuuuuuuust fine. I didn't read all the posts, So i dont know if anyone typed this but. Source depends a lot on your motherboard, and 1gig of ram and a decent videocard will get the job done. (but that means u gotta spend money)

Hey I have very similar problem and if not the same processor, I think the Intels are screwing us over, but anyways for some reason even when I look up to sky the fps goes up and down, only not as dramatically as yours do. Any help for me to? Ati-Express x600SE, 2.8 D, 1 gig.

now that I can relate to, mines suck balls even on low settings - im on my cousin's comp atm and the card is a Radeon 9200 and its wayy better than my old intergrated ( r_shadows 1 actually works now )
