2 words. Napolean Dynamite. Most overrated movie ever. It has become a religion among the American youth.

Yes, I am serious. If I had a list of overrated movie directors, Kubrick would be amongst them. He's the most detached and mechanical of directors, only preserved for the technicality of a picture rather than a script or characters. The book is much more stimulating in that it proves we are becoming a much more mechanized society in that men are losing their capacity for moral choice; clockwork oranges. Whereas Kubrick makes everyone but Alex even more of a jerkoff than he is, playing the audience into sympathy for him, the thug.

An excerpt Pauline Kael's review of the film:

http://www.visual-memory.co.uk/amk/doc/0051.html

"At the movies, we are gradually being conditioned to accept violence as a sensual pleasure. The directors used to say they were showing us its real face and how ugly it was in order to sensitize us to its horrors. You don't have to be very keen to see that they are now in fact desensitizing us. They are saying that everyone is brutal, and the heroes must be as brutal as the villains or they turn into fools. There seems to be an assumption that if you're offended by movie brutality, you are somehow playing into the hands of the people who want censorship. But this would deny those of us who don't believe in censorship the use of the only counterbalance: the freedom of the press to say that there's anything conceivably damaging in these films -- the freedom to analyze their implications. If we don't use this critical freedom, we are implicitly saying that no brutality is too much for us -- that only squares and people who believe in censorship are concerned with brutality. Actually, those who believe in censorship are primarily concerned with sex, and they generally worry about violence only when it's eroticized. This means that practically no one raises the issue of the possible cumulative effects of movie brutality. Yet surely, when night after night atrocities are served up to us as entertainment, it's worth some anxiety. We become clockwork oranges if we accept all this pop culture without asking what's in it. How can people go on talking about the dazzling brilliance of movies and not notice that the directors are sucking up to the thugs in the audience?"

id have to totally disagree with ur list... requiem is amazing in the fact that it is brutally honest and shawshank is a masterpeice for the emotions that it plays on and scarface is a classic thrusting pacino into stardom. ur list of underrated movies is a joke. ive never even heard of a single one. i sure hope ur not a film critic cuz u would be out of a job.

i dont think i could honestly make a list, i think every movie has something unique about it, some better than others but to say that movies are underrated and overrated makes no sense, underrated and overrated by who? society? roger ebert?

By people, human beings; anyone and everyone according to their own tastes developed over time. With you (like anyone else), there has to be that one movie or two that you feel didn't get enough justice, or was given the highest praise when to you it felt much ado about nothing.

Don't try to convince me that you don't think you could honestly make a list. Anyone who has seen more than a dozen movies can make a claim of,

1) What they felt was given too much praise by friends, family, or critics.

or,

2) What they felt was damned or dubbed a piece of shit by friends, family, or critics, when they felt it deserved better praise. (Here's a case in point for me: "The Right Stuff", for example.)

That is unless, of course, I'm taking it for granted with you the fact that you have seen at least a dozen movies?

Each to their own, g h o s t. I've got mine and I voiced it. C'est la vie. Deal with it.

i think it really doesnt matter cuz everyone says something different. example: pig just said titanic was overrated yet i heard people say it sucked so how was it overrated? i saw it and thought it was alright some people said it was amazing others didnt . its all real trivial if u ask me. maybe instead ill give u my list of favorite movies. doesnt matter if they are underrated or overrated.

no particular order:
1.natural born killers
2.snatch
3.fargo
4.reservoir dogs
5.seven
6.trainspotting
7.the usual suspects
8.the big lebowski
9.alien
10.taxi driver
