 Steer Mouse

1. Right click on your CS shortcut
2. Go to properties
3. Under the Target line it should say the following if you have:

Add the following: -noforcemparms -noforcemaccel -noforcemspd

Turning mouse accel off on your desktop (whole computer):

I would suggest reading and backing up your registry before you ran the cpl mouse fix (shown below). You can read how to back-up your registry from the following link:

Another good way to turn off mouse accel in CS and your desktop is the CPL mouse fix. It makes two changes to your registry to turn mouse accel off. Simply unzip the file and double click on the icon inside the unzipped file. Click yes to anything that comes up. You can also get the Win2k accel registry fix. This doesn't turn mouse accel off, it simply makes default XP mouse accel more like win2k set on low accel.

( http://ftp.thecpl.com/mouse_fix.zip ) - no mouse accel

( http://www.hardcoreware.net/files/mouse_fix.reg ) - no mouse accel

( http://jibba3.onestop.net/mouse_fix_win2K.zip ) - low mouse accel

Communication is a necessity when play most online games, especially in css, so the majority of people use a 3rd party voice communication program while playing the game. Ventrilo is probably the most common and popular one used with gamers today. So if your new to these programs now you chance to get a jump start.

First of all you should visit Ventrilo's website and download the client program (current Version 3.0.1 for windows xp). After you get it downloaded follow the installation instructions which are simple enough. Now comes the harder part for those who are new to the program. Once opened the program should look like

Vent

First of all you will need to set a user name for yourself, do this by clicking on the arrow in the red box, then click new to create a user profile. Enter your name and if you want you can enter the phonetic's of the name which will broadcast to other users when you log onto a ventrilo server.

Next you need setup a connection to a server by clicking the arrow in the blue box. Again you will have to create a server profile by clicking new, enter the name of the server you want to show. Once that is completed you will need to finish by entering the hostname or IP address of the server along with its port. For example the WoP's ventrilo has an hostname of calcium.typefrag.com and its port is 28741. Usually you will want to leave the password blank and if you wish you can enter the name of the channel you wish to start in into the default channel space otherwise you will start in the lobby.

Now that you have your name and server setup you will need to do a couple of more things to make ventrilo work the way you like. Now click on the settings tab (green box) and it will open a multi-tabbed page which looks very complicated but there is only a few things you need to do in order to use ventrilo. The most popular option for talking on ventrilo is setting a button to push which will activate your mic to talk, to do this you must check the second box down on the left (Use Push to Talk Hotkey). Then you will want to assign a key for this option, in the hotkey box move your mouse cursor inside of it and push the key you wish to use (I personally use a side button on my mouse so it doesnt take away from my movement in game). I also have both the Use direct sound boxes checked on the right side. Finally once you connect to a server you might want to adjust your Amplifiers box, doing this you can increase the sound coming into your speakers/headset and also the sound your sending (have people already connected to a server help with this so you can get optimal settings).

So there you have it the basics of ventrilo, most people buy a headset when using a p2p communication program which makes talking a lot easier. Once you get on vent it makes the game so much more enjoyable since the sound quality is much better than the in game sound provided by css.

More questions visit ventrilo's FAQ page.

Here is the outline you should all go though if you really want to Pwn in CS. Please feel free to ask questions and for help on the specifics of each step you currently feel you are in.

1. This is the step that probably all of you have already gone through or you wouldn't be reading this . It is simply to decide you want to change. Perhaps you have been playing cs casually for a few months or even more than a year. But at one point in time you want to become good. Maybe you see someone who is always at the top of one of your favorite public server and you want to be as good or even better than him. Maybe you get sick and tied of getting pwned in every cs server and decide you will not take it anymore and that no matter what it takes, you will become good. Or Maybe you just want to achieve that inner peace that all cs pwners have - it is the confidence and peace you have when you know you have mastered it and that you can beat 95% of the other cs gamers out there.

2. Read the CS guide and view the videos. This is the step where you build your knowledge of the game and learn the how's, what's, and why's that make other cs players better than you currently. You probably did not even have the vocabulary to describe what the top players in any servers were doing but I can guarantee you that they are using the techniques described in our guide - bursting techniques, spot kills, strafe stop, pull downs, proper configs, settings, etc.

3. Mimic the top players. Yes there is nothing wrong with copying or mimicing someone's gameply style. This is not school where copying the "right" or best is considered cheating. Since pig and I wrote the cs guide, you are mimicing our game styles and settings. I use a large crosshair scale, low mouse sensitivy and have my style of play that I still use to this day since i started playing cs when it came out. Perhaps you want to become as good as someone else on your favorite server, spectate and mimic his style. After reading the guide you will be able to see and have the words to describe exactly what the top players are doing and what they are doing that you were not.

4. After you have successfully gotten your gameplay to the point where it is on par with who ever you were modeling, you need to develop your own style. Pig and I have a recognizable playstyle in how we shoot and in our gameplay. We used to use different aliases but it was obvious in our regular pubs who we are. Developing your own style may mean incorporating your experiences and knowledge of maps & situations, choosing a style that you feel most comfortable with (passive or aggessive) or simply choosing to have no one style but merely adopting all of your learned skills and techniques depending on the situation.

Smoke nades are one of the most beneficial weapons in your arsenal but are usually not use to their full effectiveness. Most people only use smoke nades for cover, maybe to cross a certain place in a map which is well and good but they can be used for much more. Along with using smokes defensively you can also use them to help you pick off opponents, for example with an AWP it is relatively easy to see through a fully developed smoke if you are near it. For example, on dust2 ct side you can throw a smoke to cover you crossing double doors and also use this smoke to pick off people coming short A, this is a very good strategy if you like to snipe and will surprise many people since they think the smoke will give them cover to short A.

de_dust20007.jpgde_dust20008.jpg

Another use of smoke nades is using them to fake out the other team. The majority of experienced players now tend to turn around when being flash to try and reduce the effect of the flash. Smoke and flash nades both look and sound the same when thrown and can get players to turn leaving their back open to lace with bullets. This technique can buy u valuable time when rushing around a corner or through doorways (and it is always funny to get a knife this way =).

There is also a ton of different spots on maps where if u bounce a smoke off or over a wall you can pre-smoke an area so that the smoke is devolped before you reach the spot. A couple of easy examples on dust2 are throwing a smoke over the left tree outside of B tunnels to smoke the B bombsite. Also bouncing a smoke off the wall to long A can create effective cover to cross to the site without being picked off by snipers. These examples are shown in the following pics, of course it takes a lot of practice and getting the angles right so make sure you practice a lot, and for the B smoke it helps to throw it while you are jumping.

With patience and practice you too can become a master of smoke nades.

A popular debate amongst the counter strike community is whether a large or small crosshair is more effective in killing your targets. Let’s just say that a lot of misinformation goes around and I’m here to set things straight and give you the skinny on some of the advantages associated with each size.

Ordinarily you must adjust the crosshair scale under Options -> Multiplayer

Crosshair 1

There are three options: Small, Medium, and Large. However, users can manually adjust their crosshairs to fit their particular play style by using the command cl_crosshairscale.

Cl_crosshairscale

A user can manually adjust their crosshair size by typing cl_crosshairscale and then a numerical value between 1 and 3000. Most of the time crosshairscale is only useful between 500 and 2,000 and is heavily dependent upon screen resolution. The following pictures show the same crosshairscale under a 640x480 resolution versus an 800x600 resolution.

crosshair 2

Crosshair 3

The various crosshair sizes also have psychological benefits that may interest you. I will group them under the Large, Medium, and Small categories.

Large Crosshair: The larger crosshair has several advantages and disadvantages. The crosshair is easily visible and losing it in the middle of a firefight is very difficult. The crosshair is also ideal for spraying because the northern crosshair line is easily visible and much of spray control is dependent on how well you place this line over your target. The downside, however, is that the initial bullet of every gun will land directly in the center of your crosshair. Consequently, the large crosshair forces the player to visualize where the very center is and adjust as the subsequent bullets are fired. Instead of aiming with the center of the crosshair, use the east and west crosshair lines to establish the center and wrap them around your target.

Medium Crosshair: The best of both worlds, the medium crosshair is noticeably smaller than the larger crosshair, enabling the user to determine the starting point of a spray, but still large enough so that using pistols may be difficult for a new player.

Small Crosshair: The small crosshair is conducive for pistol usage. With a small crosshair, a player simply has to point and click with a pistol and with great accuracy knows where the bullets will land. Weapons like the colt function excellently with the small crosshair since the first two bullets land directly in the center of the crosshair, making the use of two bullet bursts excellent for headshots. The disadvantages of the crosshair include it’s visibility and spray management. A player may easily lose track of where the crosshair is on screen, especially in brightly lit areas. Spraying also becomes more difficult because of the slight jostling of the crosshair lines. Managing longer sprays that include anywhere between four to six bullets become more difficult to manage and require a sort of visualization opposite of the large crosshair. Instead of having issues with where the center of the crosshair is, the user must estimate how high the spray is climbing, as it is harder to trace in the small crosshair.

The Dynamic Crosshair

Enabling dynamic crosshair causes the crosshair to fluctuate depending on the player’s movements. I personally recommend keeping the dynamic crosshair off so as to develop consistency and a way of measuring your spray relative to the crosshair. Some people have it on, some people have it off, but the important part is that you try out both and figure out what works best for you.

Changing your Crosshair Color

Under the same option where you changed your crosshair size, you can also change your crosshair to one of several colors including red, blue, yellow, and the default green. Some servers also allow you to change your crosshair to other colors by using the cl_crosshairalpha command to change your colors. The numerical value you place after the command will determine the color of the crosshair.

As you can see, the crosshair scale is more of a psychological issue rather than a fact based issue. What is true and works for one player may not necessarily work for another, so I urge you to experiment and find out what works best for you.

Here are a couple of questions we got from CS players:

 "Hi

I've investigated alot of demo's of pro Counter-Strike:Source players and also spectated alot of great players to see where they pre-aim and how they shoot.
Concerning that I have some questions:

1. Mostly of the time good players aim at the place where the head should be when someone is crouched or at chest and sometimes upper chest. I'd like to know where's the best place to pre-aim at and when. When I see a pro walking on short they usually pre-aim at the place where the head should be when someone is crouched and on mostly of the other places they pre-aim at chest. In the first case is it because they think the enemy will crouch and spray? And in the second case is it so they can hit the enemy without missing the head and like written in the guide: get the most bullets into a target as fast as possible?

2. Sometimes I see that real good players try to headshot and other times they don't, I think there is like a rule for it, I asked some very skilled friends of me and they said they always try to headshot and that I don't need to think about that because if you shoot a headshot the enemy is dead anyway. But it bothers me that all the pro's do it, so there must be a reason. Is it something like this?: If the enemy isn't looking and easy to headshot, shoot a headshot. If it is difficult to headshot(long range and running) spray or shoot 3 to 4 bullets in a burst.

3. Now for the last question, I see most of good players prefer the M4 above the AK, I always prefered the AK for his perfect first bullet. The M4 was the weapon I always hated because 99% of the time in close or medium range I gave the enemy around 80 in 1 hit and never killed him. So why do they prefer the M4? Because it is better for spraying and has a silencer?"

1. I personally like to shoot at the chest too because I like to burst fire about 5 rounds. Aiming at the chest helps make most of the bullets land on the target when I don't want to pull the mouse down. Aiming at the head is good when you are bursting 3-4 shots and pull downwards with the mouse a little after the 2nd and 3rd shot.

2. There is no real rule for it. Its really up to you and the level of confidence in your gun skill. Sometimes its just instincts or when a player is in the zone they will just go for headshots all the time. Typically if you miss your first burst fire or you did not kill your target, you will just dampen recoil very fast by hitting a then d and just aim at the chest for the kill or stun.

3.I personally prefer the AK too because its more powerful. Many people like the M4 because the recoil is easier to control. Also there is a silencer feature for the M4 that lets you "snipe" at enemy's without giving away your position.
